Do I have to cut out sugar and caffeine totally during pregnancy?

Q. What about Caffeine Free sodas?
Or a few pieces of chocolate?
Is it that bad for you?

A. I cut out caffine to some degree but not all of it. You are allowed to drink about 6-8 cups of tea a day. I drank decaffinated tea and caffine-free coke cola (which is exactly the same). Chocolate is fine. My doctor told me to eat what I crave and when I want to.

Is decaffeinated black tea okay during the 2nd and 3rd trimester?
Q. I have completely cut out caffeine during this pregnancy but recently I have been having 1-2 cups of decaffeinated black tea a day. I am really enjoying it.

Is this bad for my baby? I am 26 weeks and 5 days pregnant.
Beccame - it is decaf!

A. Decaf is fine (so says my OB). I've had a cup or two a day with my last few pregnancies (beginning to end) and the babies have been healthy as horses!

Good luck!

Does the caffeine in Coke Zero work as a diuretic?
Q. I've had a few over the last week or so and I have been peeing constantly. I suspect that I may be pregnant but I'm not sure if the increase in urinary frequency is related to the caffeine or the possible pregnancy.

Any thoughts?

A. The caffeine in coffee is a mild diuretic, but moderate consumption of coffee has no greater effect than that seen with plain water.

How much caffeine can i drink a day?
Q. I am addicted to caffeine and I want to know how much I can drink in a day. I drink the 375ml diet coke, I drink between 4 to 10 cans a day depending on how stressed out I am. I have tried giving it up but I got headaches, get very stressed and anxious but as soon as I drank a mouthful I felt it all lift.

A. I did a search for "caffeine" and found many sites and what looks to be some good information. I also found some information on caffeine withdrawl headaches as well.

I do know that caffeine is a drug and can be addictive. I used to only drink four measuring cups of coffee a day and a diet cola or two before my pregnancy. I thought it would be hard to give up, especially knowing it would be "okay" while still pregnant (as opposed to beer and wine which I have not missed like I thought I would). I still drink coffee, maybe two or three pots (I use a four cup coffee maker) a week and while my husband bought me caffeine free diet Pepsi, I just don't like it as well any more, I think it's the soda itself. I figure that coffee is healther than soda at least. One thing I do when I want the "idea" of coffee is that I mix some already brewed grounds of half and half and either some decaf or regular, about a tablespoon's worth. It's more psychologocial than anything else and I don't think I'm really doing any harm to my baby. (I limit myself to one drink a day that is not water, soy milk or juice, so that would either be coffee or soda.)

I hope this helps. This might be a topic where you just have to do some searching on. As it is, I think I should review some of the inormation I have and have found on caffeine and pregnancy. Especially since, about four months along, I was reminded that chocolate contains caffeine. Oops.

Has there been any study on the effects of caffeine and pregnancy?

Q. I don't drink any sodas or coffee, but I do have the occasional glass of tea (like one 20 oz glass per week). I was wondering if there is any proof out there that caffeine is bad for pregnancy.

A. There have been lots of recent studies, which you can find by googling caffine and pregnancy study" and almost all of them say that 1-2 servings of caffine a day (soda, tea, or coffee) does not make a difference. My Dr. told me that I could have a daily cup of coffee and not think twice about it, which kept me sane when I got really tired.

Just make sure that with the teas that you stay away from Green teas (which blocks the absorption of folic acid) and any teas that have additives in it (like diuretic weight loss teas, or teas enanced with things guarana). It's best to have just straight forward herbal tea.

Hope that helps! Enjoy your tea.

Can caffeine hurt a baby when you are pregnant?
Q. If you drink caffeine threw your pregnancy can it hurt the baby?

A. Unless you drink cups of caffeine beverages every day, cup of soda every now and then won't hurt your baby. I'm from Europe and we drink cups of tea every day (whether you're pregnant or not) and the babies are born just fine.

Has anyone been drinking caffeine during pregnancy?
Q. I am 30 weeks pregnant and just can't let that cold cup of ice tea go....I want to have a healthy baby, but I have an addiction to sweet ice tea. Has anyone drank caffeine throughout their entire pregnancy and had a healthy baby.

A. I had the very same addiction, that & coffee coolatas from dunkin donuts :)
I definitely drank less caffeine than usually, sometimes only one-two drinks a week. My daughter was born real healthy :)
But my mom drank caffeine all the time when she was pregnant with my sisters & I. We're all healthy & my husbands mom is addicted to pepsi & drinks it A LOT & she did that with all three of her sons. They all came out healthy.
My parents along with his said that they never even heard of having to cut back on it...
It wasn't always "known" to drink less caffeine & look how many women did it, & had healthy babies. I'm sure your mom & all of your friends moms...

I drank a lot of caffeine during my second pregnancy and my daughter is very hyper-connection maybe?
Q. With my second baby I drank more caffeine then I should have, she has been wiggling non stop since the day she was born. Do you think the caffeine during pregnancy is partly to blame for it? My other two pregnancies I didn't drink caffeine and they have a normal amount of energy and can sit still.

A. I also drank alot of caffeine during pregnancy with my son.. And he is a very calm baby.. He is normal though.. So I can't tell you there is a connection.. But every women and baby is different.

Drinking caffeine during pregnancy what is your opinion?

Q. I was wondering what your opinion is about drinking caffeine during pregnancy? How much is ok? and in the first trimester should it be completely avoided?

A. Bring on the thumbs down, but i drank at least 7 cans of diet coke a day months 3-delivery day...even sneaking in two right after my c-section (i guess its bad to have carbonated drinks after b/c of bloating) but i couldn't help it...

I did cut back months 1-3 but after the first trimester i couldn't take it anymore...both girls were happy, healthy, and fine.

I was comfortable with my decision, but if you feel like its risky just don't do it :)

How to stop drinking sweet ice tea during pregnancy?
Q. I am 11 weeks pregnant and well aware that caffeine should be avoided in pregnancy, but I can't give up that cup of sweet ice tea. I usually have one cup of ice tea each week, will this harm the baby? Has anyone drank caffeine during pregnancy and baby was ok?

A. I worried about his with my first pregnancy!! When you are pregnant, it is ok to drink caffeine in moderation. If you are used to drinking a large amount of caffeine, then you are supposed to limit it. My doctor told me that it is safe to have 8 oz of coffee a day while pregnant. And tea has even less caffeine than coffee. So I say, go ahead & have your cup of sweet ice tea once a week! Enjoy!! :)

My sister drank regular Pepsi everyday with all three of her children & they all turned out beautiful & healthy! Don't worry so much! :) Congrats on your pregnancy!!
